Henry Rollins makes an argument for the black shirt

24 Aug

The London Paper (RIP sad face) has a long running debate going on about The Black Shirt. The general consensus is that black shirts are gross. To me, nothing says bad nightclub with a carpet and buy ten get ten free alcopop deals than a black shirt. Usually with creases where the cardboard was just hours before. However… Henry, Henry, Henry. To be brutal, the idea of Henry in anything other than grey or black would freak me out more. Look at him just posing like a pro at the Sons of Anarchy premiere last night. AMAZING.

Style icon: Valerie & Her Week Of Wonders

17 Aug

I did warn that there was gonna be another post about Czech new wave cinema, and I’d like to apologise again for the ridiculous nature of that concept. Valerie & Her Week Of Wonders is a 1970 film directed by Jaromil Jires and based on the book of the same name by Vitezslav Nezval.

The vaguely EROTIC coming-of-age film starred the then 13 year old (can you imagine the Daily Mail reaction? Amazing) Jaroslava Schallerova, and features beautiful dream-like sequences inspired by fairytales (the proper ones, with blood and guts) and nightmares (with OMG vampires).

I encourage you to buy it. Broaden those horizons.

A solid gold giraffe necklace

10 Aug

I imagine you’ve already seen these Kvast necklaces because they’ve been everywhere today, but deal with it. Vintage toys dipped in 24 carat gold and turned into a snazzy pendant. The giraffe is clearly the most superior creature (there were no pugs) but there’s a whole selection of beasts on there. Something for everyone. Kvast also make vegetable jewellery which is pretty exciting. So far it’s restricted to peas, cauliflower and broccoli, but it just so happens that they’re 3 of my top 5 vegetables*, so technically I win.

*FYI the other two are carrot and asparagus.

Style icons: Daisies by Vera Chytilová

10 Aug

You’re all erudite, cultural types, so I apologise in advance for talking about something that you’re probably OVER. I saw my step-dad this weekend and he reminded me of this film that needs mentioning. So here it is, even though you’ll all be yawning. Here goes. Ever seen Daisies? Of course you have, you’re smart and culturally sound. But just in case you haven’t… YOU SHOULD. It’s a new wave Czech psychedelic feminist film from the 60s by the supremely awesome director Vera Chytilová. To quickly recap: new wave, Czech, psychedelic, feminist. So far so accessible, right? It’s actually nowhere near as pretentious as you might assume. It’s about these two girls who decide that the world is spoiled, so they want to be spoiled too. Cue lots of food, winding up old men and MISADVENTURES.

It’s been a good few years since I had to analyse a film for subtexts, so excuse my lack of any in depth explanation. I think you should watch it yourself really, that’s my excuse. It’s only 70 minutes long or something, and the imagery is so strong that to be honest, you don’t even really need to follow the plot to enjoy it.

It’s recently been rereleased and Amazon has it for less than a tenner.

PS More Czech film posts to come. OH YES REALLY.

Vans rereleases original Off the Wall models

7 Aug

My boyfriend is a big fan of green shoes, so I guess he’s going to be excited about Vans rereleasing their classic styles complete with vintage packaging. Original Off The Wall styles from the 70s brought back to life in the original colourways – and sexy 70s suede, of course. Pretty hot, but I think I actually like the boxes best, especially with the original slogan… The World’s First Skateboard Shoes.

Salt n Pepa salt and pepper shakers

This Etsy seller really needs to get her booty in gear and restock these…

That or I guess I could just make my own. Awesome.

I was gonna attempt a witty/entertaining post, but the seller has written a really awesome advert, so just read that instead.
