Jewellery finds from Lewisham Burglary Squad

31 Jul

Graham Linehan is one of my favourite people to follow on Twitter, and not just because he’s such a big Jedward fan. Today he linked to a story about police in Lewisham using Flickr to reunite people with their stolen items – more specifically, jewellery.

Us Lewisham folk clearly have good taste, because the items displayed in the Lewisham Burglary Squad set are all pretty awesome.

Jewellery appreciation aside, I think this is a really neat idea – although how people will provide proof of ownership I’m not sure. The scheme has apparently already been used in Camden to great success, with about 5,000 people visiting the album – although no word on how many happy reunions have taken place.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Astbury, Serious Acquisitive Crime at Lewisham said: “We are utilising every tool available to us to identify as many victims as possible and return this jewellery back to their rightful owners. Using Flickr works and this has already proved be the case in Camden. We hope that by making use of this technology people will look through the images and recognise their property. “

If you recognise any of the jewellery, you can call PC Aaron Barr on 020 8284 5040 and reclaim it!

Bandanas from Big Things Shop

30 Jul

The Big Things shop has so many nice things, including these informative and attractive bandanas.

From fish to flies and whales and star signs, they remind me of I-Spy books or some educational children’s books from the 70s, when car journeys were about playing the pub sign leg counting game or spotting things out of the window, rather than reading a Kindle or watching Kung Fu Panda on your private head-rest TV.

The constellation one glows in the dark!

Tassels and tinsel from Lenebelle

29 Jul

Rather taken with these Lenebelle tasselled bracelets, which remind me of the Confetti System tassel garlands I first spotted on Emily’s blog.

The most stylish performances on MTV Unplugged

24 Jul

The latest video in the Swatch MTV Playground features Fred Butler on music. Fashion designer Fred explains that although she has no musical talent herself,  she maintains a healthy relationship with the industry through her involvement and collaboration with artists – creating outfits, accessories and props means she can contribute to music in her own way.

You can see what Fred has to say in the video above and if you want to hear more about her projects there’s a series of fantastic interviews with her and Beth Ditto here, where the two women discuss Grace Jones, origami and a blissful ignorance of celebrities.

In the spirit of Fred’s creative collaborations, and in keeping with MTV’s musical heritage , here are some of my favourite performances from stylish people on Unplugged:

aerosmith unplugged
Beautiful Steven Tyler wears flamboyant florals so well. Not many men would get a pass for so much accessorising but it’s Steven Tyler man!

hole unplugged

Inspiring 14-year-olds across the world since 1995, Courtney Love’s black lacy look feels as relevant now as it did 16 years ago.

bjork unplugged

The biggest weapon in Bjork’s creative arsenal is her insane voice so you can forgive her for appearing in a nice dress and not much else, except a serious face of makeup.

Obsessed with Ben Venom wall hangings

24 Jul

Bit late to the party with Ben Venom, but in case you missed him too – here is is. This notion of making traditional crafts cool and relevant has been going on for a while, with knitting circles and cake-baking as de rigueur as good old fashioned binge-drinking these days.

So, nice to see someone giving an actual fresh twist on an old craft. Ben uses traditional quilting methods to transform vintage heavy metal shirts in to decorative – if not slightly dark – wall-hangings and throws.

Ben says:

I’m interested in juxtaposing traditional handmade crafts with one of the more extreme musical genres, Heavy Metal. My work can be described as a collision of Iron Maiden Metal ballads with the outrageous stage antics of Ozzy Osbourne. Serious, yet attempting to take on a B movie Horror film style where even the beasts of Metal need a warm blanket to sleep with. The question remains… Can I play with madness?

I mean… the man makes Iron Maiden puns. Love his work, slightly twitching at the amazing shirts being cut up.

What do you think Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmerman are dancing to in the Lanvin ad?

23 Jul

The Autumn/Winter Lanvin campaign sees goddess Karen Elson and demi-goddess Raquel Zimmerman busting some serious moves, albeit with very straight faces. I really hope they release a video of these guys in action, but for now, here’s what I imagine they’re dancing to…

Christian Lacroix does stationery

23 Jul

Fancy stationery is a total treat, even in this day and age of texts and emails. I personally would be happy to have my phone surgically grafted in my forearm, such is my love of electronic communication – but I still have an abundance of nice stationery for thank you letters and the like, plus when note-taking at swanky events there’s nothing like a nice notebook to show off your shorthand.

Christian Lacroix is the latest designer to turn his hand to the art of posh paper, with a series of notebooks, correspondence cards and writing paper for the V&A. As you can no doubt imagine, Lacroix gives stationery a decidedly decadent look with insects, period costumes and his trademark bows and ribbons all combining for a style which appears to be inspired by the Victorian obsession for collaging.

Beautiful!

Prices start at £12.99, available online or at the V&A.

THE SUN IS OUT!!

Faux fur and leopard print ftw

21 Jul

I’m sure you’re all tired as I am of this ridiculous weather we’re having in London – rain in summer I can deal with; foggy, grey skies not so much. Add to that extended waits on the platform at Croydon as the train is perpetually delayed and the Arctic-degree air conditioning in the office and things start getting a bit more complicated. It’s muggy, it’s wet, it’s cold, it’s windy… and then factor in meetings, parties and a social life and it all starts getting a bit tricky to dress for.

I bought this vintage black blazer in Sheffield last summer for £8 (£8!!!) and although its fuzzy white faux fur collar suggests winter, it’s lightweight enough to be fine for standing around waiting for trains and/or shrugging on in the office when it gets too cold. Also, for someone who owns very little in the way of ‘smart’ clothes, it does a decent job of pulling everything together.

Worn with the Whistles Kiki skirt which I debated buying for so long that it went in to the ‘final reductions’ part of the sale and that Topshop t-shirt I always wear. Also. a new necklace.

I got a new charm necklace in Topshop a few weeks ago and loved it dearly, but somehow managed to lose it in a changing room in Sheffield. Even though it was a recent buy I can’t find it anywhere, so had to buy this as alternative. Who am I kidding? It’s not an alternative, it’s better.
