Beauty and the Beast: Elegant Touch Envy Wraps

31 Dec

I’m a firm advocate of getting your nails done professionally (at WAH or Nail Girls ideally) but sometimes time is tight and money is even tighter and you still want a jazzy manicure to cheer you up.

Sheffield is sadly lacking in good places to get your nails did (or at least places with a personal recommendation), but I found these Elegant Touch DIY nail wraps in Superdrug and as they were about a fiver, I thought they might be worth a bash. Amongst the usual metallic designs (tiger and leopard and the like), I found these interesting ones – I thought they were super-zoomed-in crystals or diamonds or something, but I’ve just discovered that they’re called Scrunched Aluminium which I can also see.

To use, you simply peel the stickers off and place them over your nail then file off the ends to shape. Easy. They suggest putting a basecoat on first, which I duly did, but I think they would have had better grip without it and with nails buffed instead. They also suggested a topcoat – again, I don’t think it was necessary but I did it anyway.

They’re supposed to last five days, which I’d say was about right – you can see in the picture that it’s not entirely flush on the bottom of the nail, but after taking this picture I squidged it down again and they stayed relatively flat over the whole of Christmas including throughout my ventures in the kitchen.

All in all, no replacement for a proper manicure but a decent enough way to tart up your nails for a few nights and at that price you can’t argue really. I’ve seen a few on beauty blogs where people have done a much better job, so maybe I was just a bit cackhanded. I did do them in bed after a couple of ales.

You can buy them in Boots and Superdrug (although I can’t find them online) and, of course, on Amazon.

Story of a trend: I love my sheep jumper

30 Dec

I posted this on Facebook just before Christmas, but in case anyone had the misfortune to miss it…

Here’s me as a dazzling blonde in my favourite sheep jumper at some point in the 80s.

Princess Diana wore something very similar in 1983, but I don’t think my mam knitted mine in homage – she’s not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination. I imagine Woman was stuffed full of Di-inspired knitting patterns at the time though, so perhaps that’s where she found it. I was obsessed with sheep at this stage in my life so it was a very thoughtful gift.

Finally, here’s the See by Chloe sheep jumper which everyone went bananas for last Christmas.

Funny how things turn out, I’d kil for my sheepy sweater now.

1) Well, it took some finding but I managed to get there eventually. You can listen to the whole of PG Wodehouse’s 1927 Christmas Classic, Jeeves and the Yuletide Spirit online here. What a ruddy treat! It’s read by Julian Rhind-Tutt, as an added bonus.

2) Tis the season for boozing and if you’re still in London you can combine history, Christmas and delicious ale with Time Out‘s Charles Dickens-themed pub walk. It includes a few of my ol’ favourites and if the pictures are to be believed, one pub includes a cat in a ruff.

3) I’ve spent most of this week lying down in various warm places reading. It’s a known fact that short stories and anthologies are best in these situations, as a full belly, booze-addled brain, central heating and a reclining position generally lead to snoozing. I’ve been working through Fitzgerald’s On Booze writings mainly, leading to the discovery of one of his favourite cocktails.

If you want to get warmly drunk, the Seelbach cocktail might do the trick. In The Great Gatsby, a venue inspired by the Seelbach Hotel is the backdrop to Tom and Daisy’s wedding – this is the real hotel’s signature, which disappeared in the 80 years following the prohibition. Potent.

30ml bourbon
15ml Cointreau
7 dashes angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
15ml champagne

Pour the bourbon into a champagne flute then add the Cointreau and bitters. Top with champagne. Imbibe.

By the way, bitters are important kit if you like your booze. You can get them in any decent supermarket but The Bitter Truth also do a snazzy selection if you like your alcohol to look as good as it tastes.

4) Being in Sheffield is tops, largely because there’s so much amazing ale. Kelham Island Brewery is one of our faves and their -Rider selection is always worth a sniff. For Christmas, I’m looking forward to tackling Sleigh Rider which contains crystal malt. Oooh.

5) Oh and… Sheffield is also great for vintage shopping as we all know. These Christmas jumpers may or may not have come home with today.

Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket gifts: all the fun of the stripes, less money

21 Dec

It’s that time of year again when I crack out my Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket coat and am faced with a) bemused comments about how colourful my jacket is, and b) hysterical screaming from Canadians.

You can read my old post explaining all about the stripey magnificence and history of the Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket coat here, but for now here’s another use for the bay blankets – a limited edition bag from Rebecca Ray.

I think I would die happy if one of these ended up under my Christmas tree, particularly with the dog rosette finish – although it also pains me slightly to think of someone hacking up such a beautiful piece of fabric, even when the end product is awesome.

You can buy plenty of blanket-related paraphernalia on the Hudson’s Bay site too, with everything you could possibly imagine emblazoned with the distinctive four stripes.

I do sometimes wonder which hat to wear with my jacket – what with all those colours it can be a challenge. Answer is quite clearly a knitted had in coordinating colours. Buy it here or ask your mam to knit you one, which is what I will be doing. Perhaps.

Why do you get to be the only one all wrapped and toasty? Selfish bastard. The Hudson’s Bay hipflask not only features a cracking crest reminding everyone where your bad-ass jacket is from, it also comes complete with its own miniature coat made out of a little ol’ square of blanket. Dreamy.

It snows a lot in Canada so it makes sense that they take snowman building more seriously than most. If you want to ensure your snowman is comfortable showing his face in the crowd, why not finish off with this snazzy Snowman Kit? Oh yes, as well as a miniature blanket scarf, you also get a wooden carrot, buttons and a pipe for the ol’ feller. What an increds present for a hardcore Hudson fan. Like me.

A few of my favourite Christmas albums

20 Dec

There’s nothing I like more than Christmas music – I generally start listening around mid-November and try and eke it out until January. This piece in the Guardian last week suggested that there’s no such thing as a bad Christmas song and I’m tempted to agree – give me a rousing chorus, sleigh bells and a children’s chorus and I’m happy.

As well as all the usual suspects, here’s what I’ve mostly been listening to the last few weeks – with their Spotify links, as apparently all my favourite music is out of print.

El Vez – Merry MeX-mas

El Vez is a Mexican sort-of Elvis impersonator (geddit?), who is a bit bananas. His Christmas album is a raucous affair as is befitting of a singer who started life in The Zeros. This album combines a few covers with original music including such highlights as Santa Claus is Sometimes Brown and Mamacita Donde Esta Santa Clause?

Album highlight: Feliz Navidad, of course

The Border Brass – Tijuana Christmas

Sticking with the Mexican theme but with a more traditional feel than El Vez is this treat of a record. Christmas carols are amazing, it goes without saying, but they are a bit samey after a while (ie three months of non-stop listening). This album is the perfect antidote because it combines all the classic carols with a jazzy brass band twist which is relentlessly upbeat.

Album highlight: The ba-ba-ba bit of Tijuana Christmas

RuPaul – Ho Ho Ho

I’ve been banging on about RuPaul’s festive offering a great deal this year but that’s because it’s incredible. Christmas is all about camp and this is about as camp as it gets, complete with bitchy retorts and one-liners. It’s not just a comedy novelty album though, it’s genuinely a great album.

Album highlight: It’s a toss-up between All Alone on Christmas (aka the best Christmas song ever) and You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch

Bootsy Collins – Christmas is 4 Ever

I am a fully fledged funk obsessive and Bootsy’s Christmas album is always a favourite. Festive yes, tacky no – not really anyway. It’s a right old jazzy little number and half of the time you can’t even tell it’s Christmas music which is probably what you need when you’re in the midst of #partyseason fatigue.

Album highlight: Jingle Belz

Various – Happy Birthday Baby Jesus

A fun-packed double-CD containing covers and original music from the likes of Rocket From the Crypt, The Shitbirds and The Muffs. Generally novelty albums are about as funny as an episode of Two Pints of Lager but these are genuinely funny and manage to retain a wholeheartedly festive feel.

Album highlight: Nothing for Me from The Muffs

Dolly Parton – Home for Christmas

Finally, for some all-out Christmas schmaltz, you can’t beat Dolly Parton. Sadly this album doesn’t feature her best festive song (Hard Candy Christmas from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) but that’s probably for the best, as it generally leaves me sobbing like a baby. This is just good old fashioned carols, with Dolly giving it her all. Can’t beat it really.

Album highlight: Joy to the World with its talky bit in the middle

Predictable ongoing obsession with crosses…

17 Dec

I still haven’t made it to the Village Bicycle shop over in that West London but Willa’s wall of crosses haunts my mind on a daily basis. A combination of this picture and a rogue necklace I found in Topshop (its not online, alas) sent me down an Etsy k-hole and I came out the other side with a full wishlist of turquoise crosses.

So many turquoise crosses on Etsy. Are turquoise crosses a thing? Apart from a really nice thing?

Beauty and the Beast: Winter 2011 favourites

17 Dec

It’s not even really that wintery yet, but this week has definitely seen it getting a bit parky so I figured I’d share a few favourites.

Starting with… The Roll-Ka comb! I got given this when I went to the Hercules Sägemann factory earlier this year and swore I’d written about it before, but clearly not. How and why? It’s the best comb ever – I was told it was better than a Tangle Teezer and (sorry but) it is.

This mermaid hair of mine isn’t made for windy weather and as our office in the middle of a wind tunnel I usually end up looking a bit bedraggled. This is the only thing that gets the knots out without losing half my hair – no snagging, no pulling, no hurting. The idea is that the red cylinder rolls as you go, preventing any painful tugging. You can also pop it out to wash it as we all know a clean comb is a happy comb, right?

I love pretty much all the Korres products I’ve ever tried and their Mandarin Lip Butter is no exception. I have the rose one (far right) and it just does what it’s supposed to do. I don’t think there’s really that much even the most dedicated beauty writer can say about lip balm if it works – it makes your lips really soft, adds a tiny bit of colour, smells great and lasts for ages.

For more heavy duty dry lips or general dry skin I always recommend Balm Balm. Their Fragrance Free Face Balm is all natural, suitable for even the most sensitive skin,  moisturising and all with none of the stank you often get from organic botanical products. I get through piles of this stuff and the even better news is that they’re a family run, Brit-based company. Neato.

I thought I was a bit late to the party with BB creams, but then I looked more closely at one of my favourite products from this year and discovered, uh, it’s a BB cream. Erborian Ginseng BB Creme lives in my office drawer and gets used probably twice a day – still going strong with the first tube though. As with any BB cream, it moisturises, covers blemishes, adds a bit of colour, and just somehow makes your skin look radiant and glowing. Brilliant stuff and ideal for when you look crap after a night out and want to fake a healthy complexion. Bloody love it, not tried any other BB creams, have no intention of doing so. Oh and it has SPF 25 which, yes, is still important in winter as we all know.

Bumble and bumble has finally launched a UK site which is great news as the products are some of my favourite in the industry. Defrizz does what it says on the tin – use on wet or dry hair to smooth out all that central heating-induced damage and make your hair look nice and healthy and shiny, basically. I’m still a slave to my oils, but this is an A+ styling product and a happy addition to my winter arsenal.

This is an ancient product but I just rediscovered it and have been wearing it obsessively since, so here goes. Pixi Beauty is a bit of an unsung favourite beauty range of mine and this Champagne Glow eye shadow is the most amazing everyday colour they do. It’s beige, but I challenge you to ever find a more sparkling beige.

Wallis Simpson at the Little Black Gallery

16 Dec

Well, not quite Wallis Simpson. It’s actually Andrea Riseborough as Wallis Simpson, in Madonna’s upcoming W.E. film which you’ve already seen me harp on about here, here and here.

Just a little heads up for fellow Wallis-ites… Photographer Anthony Souza has a smell pre-Christmas exhibition on at London’s Little Black Gallery, featuring behind-the-scenes and on-set shots of the film – as well as some of his personal shots from India.

Madonna hand-picked the 25-year-old to document her upcoming drama and tasked him with capturing the style of Cecil Beaton’s original photographs of the couple. He was on hand for every single scene filmed, so there should be plenty to enjoy.

Anthony says: “I was visually inspired by the sets and costumes, and the romanticism and visual elegance of the scenes, which made me approach the photos as artistic works and not just publicity stills.”

The exhibition is on until 20 December at the Little Black Gallery, which you can find at 13A Park Walk, London SW10 0AJ

In related news, you can win a pair of signed W.E. prints from Anthony on the Stylist website at the moment. Find out more here!

Shiny Christmas dresses from the Matches.com sale

16 Dec

The best thing about all these sales popping up before Christmas is buying yourself #partyseason treats. When I got an email about the Matches sale this morning I had a cursory glance and it soon became apparent that they are pretty much a one-stop shop for Christmas Day dresses, should you go in for all that. We trudge to church first thing in the morning on the 25th and having a festive dress planned is one of the few things that makes crawling out of bed bearable.

I’d be happy with any of these numbers – although who am I kidding, I chose my Christmas Day dress back in September.

It’s red and it’s velvet, but it’s also leopard print. Marc by Marc Jacobs dress was £510, now £255.

Can’t beat red satin at Christmas really, can you? And it has a jumbo bow which we all know = festive. Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Friday dress was £310, now £217.

Red plaid flannel is about as festive as it gets and the drop-waist gives a sly ol’ fashion nod to next season. Carven Tartan dress was £364, now £254.

You’d never believe this tasteful, demure number was D&G but there you have it. Velvet and Lace dress was £585, now £409.

And if you’re not a dress person, this is possibly the most luxe Christmas jumper going. Marc by Marc Jacobs Sequinned Sweater was £490, now £196.

I wish I could tell you had an extra email subscriber’s discount code, but I don’t. If that changes, you’ll be the first to know.

1) Isabelle’s Christmas playlist is even better than mine. Listen to it!

2) This montage of sloths is the best animal-related thing I’ve seen this week.

3) How to Turn Down a Drink at Christmas. Should probably have read that before the office party transcended into a game of I Have Never last night.

4) I hadn’t visited the Andrew WK store for a while, but following his one-man fashion show this week I was reminded of how much good stuff it contained. I’ll take the Party Til You Puke shirt.

5) Finally got to go to Mishkins with Isabelle, Laura, Harriet and Emily. Here’s a tip for you; take a Monday off and get pissed at lunchtime with your mates on champagne cocktails, using burgers and macaroni cheese to soak up some of the damage. I thought it was brilliant and have just made two bookings for Christmas sooo… [Pic = theirs]

6) So now I have a new food dream. The Balcon at St James – charcuterie and champagne in surroundings inspired by Coco Chanel’s deco apartment. Uhm dreamy.
